Jean-Antoine Houdon was a master French portrait scuIptor, who was summoned to Virginia to create a portrait of George Washington for the state capitol. The now famous bust took Houdon and his workmen nearly seven years to complete. He utilized sketches, as well as a life mask and plaster impressions to accurately capture Washington's likeness.
